Obituary of Joseph Norbert Walterhoefer

On Sunday, June 27, 2021, Mr. Joseph Norbert Walterhoefer, age 92, passed away peacefully in the Charlestown Community. From the time of his birth, September 19, 1928, Joseph was a Baltimore native who had a thirst of traveling the world. He was born to the late Mr. Walterhoefer and Marie Walterhoefer (nee Lorenz), and graduated from Mt. Saint Joseph’s High School. He then enlisted first in the US Navy, then served in the US Army, before starting a long-term career for the phone company. First as a line man for C&P Telephone, then on to Verizon as a manager. While working at C&P, he went to the University of Baltimore where he received his master’s degree. During that time, he met, fell in love with, and married Betty Ann Walterhoefer (nee Berens). They were married for an amazing, fun filled 67 years. The pair traveled all over the world and shared many great stories with people all over. At 55, Joseph retired, and they decided to spend that time conquering all the travel their hearts desired. They were blessed by Pope Benedict at the Vatican and were some of the first Americans to visit East Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall. He is survived by his wife Betty Ann Walterhoefer (nee Berens); nephews Eric Berens, and wife Ronda, Karl Berens, and wife Kelley, John Berens, and wife Cynthia; Nieces Diane Berens, and Catherine Zumbroich, and husband Volker; as well as numerous other great nieces and nephews, as well as other loving family. He is preceded in death by his mother Marie Walterhoefer (nee Lorenz), his aunt Gertrude, and uncle Reinhard Lorenz. Services will be held at Loudon Park Funeral Home, Inc., 3620 Wilkens Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21229. Viewing will be held on Friday, July 2, 2021 from 5-7pm. A Catholic burial mass will be held at St. Benedict’s Church, 2612 Wilkens Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21223 on Saturday, July 3, 2021 at 12pm. Burial will follow in Loudon Park Cemetery. A memorial gathering will be held later in August in Joseph Walterhoefer’s honor.
